Featured Question: Hi, my
name is Chris. I think I was too nice. My girlfriend’s
sister had been living with a guy for 3 years. I “helped”
him get off his bum and propose. Unfortunately, I did too
good a job. He proposed while taking her on a private plane
ride above Chicago, and then took a limo home. I am ready
to propose to my girlfriend of one year, how long should I
wait to propose? Also, my pocket book can’t compete with
his proposal; any proposal ideas?
Annie:
Chris, your girlfriend is one
lucky woman! First, you recognized your bro-in-law’s “bummness”,
proceeded to get him off the pot and do the right thing!
Love it! Secondly, you are very thoughtful to consider your
future in-laws and their time in the sun. I think waiting
at least 2-3 months to propose to your girlfriend is very
appropriate. Regarding the proposal: Believe me when I say
that 99% of women do not care how extravagant your proposal
is! Now take a deep breath, and stop thinking about blowing
her mind, but rather touching her heart (sappy, but true).
Paul:
I have to agree with Annie on
this one, however part of me is tempted to advise you to
take out a small loan to blow your brother-in-law out of the
water. Sorry, I’m a bit competitive! Waiting a bit to
propose is a great idea; you don’t want to create tension
between your girlfriend and her sister, (bad for her, worse
for you!). I proposed to Annie at the top of Mt. Beirstadt,
one of Colorado’s fourteener’s. I decided on this trek for
my proposal because we both share a love for the outdoors.
The only cost incurred was obviously the ring (ouch!) and
the cost of personalized “tuxedo” t-shirts with the date,
time and place printed on the back. The extra shirts were
for the guys at the surprise engagement party waiting at her
house upon our return from our hike. It was awesome!
